Understand Meditation

We've all heard the term meditation but what does it actually mean and how do you begin?

The term is widely recognised, but to understand meditation, its essence and how to use it in initiating your journey can feel perplexing. This article aims to help you to understand meditation, what it is, the benefits and how to use it so that you can commence a fulfilling practice.

What is Meditation?

Meditation constitutes a mental and physical practice that enhances concentration, calms the mind and body, and fosters patience as well as delivering an array of other health and wellbeing benefits. To embark on a successful meditation journey, it's recommended to begin gradually and find your own path at your preferred pace. This isn't a race, there's no demand to be brilliant at it immediately and at the beginning you can expect to feel silly or like it's not doing anything. If you're serious about meditation, decide to give it your all, for 4 minutes a day. That's it, 4 minutes a day to achieve a happier, calmer, more focussed, healthier you. You'll no doubt know from other experiences in your life that in order to get good at something, you need to keep doing it. Give yourself time to settle in and choose to give it a real shot. You owe it to yourself to try!

The Origins of Meditation

Meditation's roots trace back to ancient times, with documented instances as early as 3000 BCE in India. While also practiced in China and Japan, the exact origins remain debated among historians. The practice spread to the West through the Silk Road, influencing religions like Judaism, which integrated meditative techniques. Even Plotinus, in the 3rd century AD, developed meditative techniques with limited integration into Christianity.

Japanese monk Dosho, in the sixth century AD, introduced meditation to Japan after discovering it in China. This marked the inception of meditation halls and teachings in Japan. Over time, the practice flourished, and terminology evolved, such as the term "meditate" introduced by Monk Guigo II in the 12th century AD.

Meditation's Western Journey

While meditation has ancient roots, its Western popularity surged in the 18th century. The "Tibetan Book of the Dead," published in 1927, piqued Western interest, followed by the Vipassana movement in Burma during the 1950s. "The Dharma Bums" in 1958 and the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) movement in 1979 further solidified meditation's Western presence, employing meditative techniques for managing chronic conditions.

The Benefits of Meditation

Meditation's prowess goes beyond mere perception – the numbers speak for themselves. Delve into the quantifiable evidence that underlines how meditation tangibly transforms physical well-being.

  1. Stress Slash and Heart Health: Escape stress's grip through meditation. In a five-year study involving 201 patients with coronary heart disease, practicing transcendental meditation for just 15 minutes a day led to a remarkable 48% decrease in the risk of death, heart attack, and stroke. This improvement was closely linked to lower blood pressure and reduced stress levels among the participants.
  2. Immunity Amplification: A recent review of 20 trials investigated mindfulness meditation's impact on the immune system. Encouragingly, mindfulness meditation was found to:
  • Decrease inflammation markers linked to weaker immunity.
  • Increase CD-4 cell count, immune helpers.
  • Boost telomerase activity, safeguarding chromosomes from damage.

These findings suggest mindfulness techniques could fortify our immune defences. Another study with HIV-positive men showed similar positive effects on CD-4 cell counts.

  1. Inflammation Taming: Inflammation's menace bows before meditation. This recent review of 20 randomised controlled trials involving over 1600 participants suggests that mindfulness meditation may positively influence the immune system. It appears to reduce inflammation, enhance cell-mediated defence mechanisms, and promote enzyme activity that fights cellular ageing.
  2. Pain Mastery and Mind-Body Connection: Meditation's power over pain is unequivocal. This recent study cites a resounding 57% drop in pain intensity and 40% reduction in pain unpleasantness with mindfulness meditation.
  3. Cellular Rejuvenation: Unlock cellular vitality through meditation. Recent studies have unveiled meditation's astonishing potential to influence our cellular health. Telomeres, protective caps at the chromosome ends, play a pivotal role in ageing and well-being. In a 2011 study at a retreat, participants exhibited significantly higher telomerase activity, a key enzyme linked to telomere lengthening, after just 30 days of meditation. This 2014 study showcased a 43% surge in telomerase activity among older individuals practicing chanting meditation for 12 minutes daily over eight weeks, contrasting with a control group. This study conducted by Ornish et al. (2008) observed that lifestyle changes, including meditation, were associated with increased telomerase activity—an enzyme that maintains telomere length. These findings, among many others, show meditation's transformative prowess in enhancing cellular vitality and mental well-being, offering a glimpse into its impact.
  4. Sleep Revival: Revamp sleep quality through meditation. This study found that mindfulness meditation, specifically MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) and MBTI (mindfulness-based therapy for insomnia), effectively reduced time spent awake in bed and sleep-related arousal for chronic insomnia patients. MBTI showed greater long-term improvement in insomnia severity compared to MBSR. Participants considered both treatments credible and were willing to practice meditation.

Numbers don't lie – meditation's impact is undeniable. From defusing stress bombs to bolstering immunity and conquering pain, meditation isn't just a practice; it's a transformational journey towards peak physical vitality.
